Award Winning Numbers Matching GTO
In the land of moderately priced blue-chip muscle, the GTO is king. When people think of the first muscle car, they think of the GTO. And today, when youre looking to invest in some muscle without spending six figures, the GTO store is the place to shop. An investment-grade car doesnt need to cost more than your house to be a safe place to park some money, and few other muscle cars (or any investment for that matter) has shown the steady, reliable growth that the GTO market does. This beautifully restored, show winning, numbers-matching 1967 GTO coupe is a perfect example. It wont make you rich overnight, but you can use it, enjoy it, and be confident that it will always be worth at least as much as you paid for it today. Even in todays overheated auction climate, a car that will reliably retain its value is a very rare thing indeed.
It certainly doesnt hurt that this particular GTO is as fast as it is beautiful, thanks to a restoration that took nearly 10 years. Refinished in the original Signet Gold color, its unusual and upscale, exactly the image the folks at Pontiac were shooting for when they conceived the GTO. The body was clearly stripped bare and restored on a rotisserie, and the finish is about a hundred times better than factory new. All the sheet metal is original to the car, suggesting that it has lived its entire life somewhere dry and warm. Those massive quarter panels must have taken weeks to get that straight, and another several dozen frustrating hours were undoubtedly burned getting the panels to align as well as they do on this car. Look a little closer and youll see that after the 2-stage urethane went on, someone spent even more time color sanding and buffing the paint to eliminate imperfections and give it that show-ready gloss that we all love. A correct black pinstripe was added, running from the leading edge of the front fenders all the way back to the rear fenders.
The chrome on this car is exceptional, and you could spend a long time examining it and not find any issues. Most of the stainless has been restored, although the rockers appear to be original pieces, which speaks volumes about how well-preserved this car was before the restoration. The unique GTO mesh grilles up front were professionally restored to better-than-new condition, and all the GTO badges were reinstalled after the paint was dry. Although it is coded for a black vinyl top, the restorer decided to forego that option which keeps this goats lines clean and uncluttered.
The GTO was the first GM intermediate to get a big cubic inch engine, and this 67 sports its original 400 cubic inch V8. Topped by a correct 4-barrel carburetor under that chrome plated air cleaner, it was rated at 335 horsepower, more than enough to deliver sparkling performance and effortless high-speed cruising. The engine is the original YS-code block with the original heads, all rebuilt and painted with correct Pontiac turquoise paint. Chrome valve covers match the air cleaner and add a little sparkle under the hood. Its also important to note that this car features factory A/C, which was fully restored with the car and blows ice cold as it should. Detailing is exact throughout, and its obvious that someone spent a lot of time and money sweating the details. All the tags, emblems, stickers, and markings are correct, and it wont surprise anyone to learn that this GTO has already collected some very impressive trophies. The only deviation from 100% stock specification is an electronic ignition conversion that makes a noticeable difference in the way the car starts and drives, and is completely invisible without disassembling the distributor.
Underneath, it is every bit as nice and ready to compete on the show field. A TH400 3-speed automatic swaps gears, and in my opinion is the ideal compliment to this sophisticated GTOs demeanor. Out back, a 12-bolt houses 3.55 gears which provide great off-the-line grunt while maintaining decent high-speed cruising abilities. The original floors on this car are completely solid, and have been painted correct satin black. The suspension has been rebuilt front and rear, including correct spiral-type shock absorbers. An accurate reproduction dual exhaust system has been installed, including correct hangers and resonators. It also features power front disc brakes and power steering, making it a very easy car to drive around town. Like the engine bay, correct markings and labels have been applied. And for the perfect finishing touch, correct Goodyear bias-ply redline tires have been installed on restored Rally 1 wheels.
Look again at the trim tag, and youd expect to see a black interior, but like the vinyl roof delete, Im really digging the gold upholstery. Its different and upscale, and looks positively awesome inside this Signet Gold coupe. Look past the color and youll see that this is a real bucket seat car with a console and the too-cool-for-school his and hers shifter. With the color change, you know that everything in there is brand new, from the carpet to the headliner. The seats have fresh foam underneath, so they feel like new, and the gauges are crisp and clear. Get behind the wheel and youll see the hood-mounted tachometer, one of the coolest options ever devised. The original AM radio has been rebuilt, and as I mentioned earlier, the factory A/C blows ice cold. New black floor mats wearing the Pontiac shield break up the sea of gold perfectly. The trunk is nicely detailed with spatter finish paint, a new mat, and a matching bias-ply tire on a steel wheel, along with a restored jack assembly.
The lucky new owner of this Goat also gets a big package of documentation, including the original owners manual. Theres a full package of PHS information that includes a copy of the original build sheet, window sticker, and promotional literature. The owner has put together a comprehensive build book on the 10-year restoration, showing it from start to finish with photos and receipts. This car was also featured in an issue of High Performance Pontiac magazine, and of course a copy is included with the car. Awards include a Gold Award from the Pontiac/Oakland club where this car scored 367 out of 400 points, and it won the popular vote at the 2009 GTOAA POCI Co-Vention. No doubt about it, this is a seriously nice car.
Go ahead and look at the auctions, the value guides, and listen to what the experts have to saytheyll all agree that the GTO is the gold standard of affordable muscle. Top quality cars continue to bring top dollar, despite the lousy economy, and this car certainly qualifies. Starting with a well-optioned, numbers-matching, rust-free car results in a spectacular restored piece that isnt done winning shows. This car could easily contend at the Pontiac Nationals this summer, and with its unique color combination and cool options, there will be a crowd around it all weekend. And it will always be worth at least as much as you paid for it. Is there a better hobby car than that? Even uber-rare Hemi Cudas have trouble making that claim. If youre a smart investor or just a major Pontiac fan, you know what to docall now!
