Finest Restored Mustang Boss 302 4 Speed in the World!
Here at RK Motors, were no strangers to the finest cars in the world. Weve not only featured some of the best cars, but weve restored national show winners, so we know what it takes to win at the highest levels. But sometimes a car comes in and just flat-out blows us away with its quality and presentation. This 1970 Boss 302 is just such a car. Not only was it restored using exclusively NOS parts, but it has a documented ownership history from new, all the original purchase paperwork including the window sticker and build sheet, and it has already been judged to be only 3 points away from perfection at the national level. Noted Boss 302 expert Bob Perkins claims this car was restored using a collection of NOS parts that are simply no longer available and will never be available again. With Boss 302 prices on the rise, you simply cant go wrong by owning the nicest one in the world. And here it is.
Perhaps the easiest place to start on this car is with the flaws, because there are only three small ones. This car won the Mustang Club of America National First Prize for the Trailered Class (which means the best of the best, by the way) with a score of 697 out of 700 points. We have the judging forms from that show, and the first thing you notice is that one of the judges wrote NICE CAR! on the cover, so even he was impressed. Deductions include one point for a small stain on the thermostat housing gasket, one point for a tiny nick on the drivers seat, and one point because the passengers seat back was not securely latched during judging. These results tell you a few things. First, this car is so nice, the judges really had to work hard to find ANYTHING wrong with it. It also tells you that these guys really know their stuff and that if there were any flaws anywhere else on the car, they would have found them. With a little clean-up on the thermostat housing and a gentle push to latch the passengers seat, this car became a 699/700 point car. Yeah, we were astounded too.
The body on this metallic blue Boss is 100% original sheet metal. No patches, no replacement quarters, no cut-up floors, but all Henry steel throughout. But if you think the restorers simply repainted it, youd be sadly mistaken. It was completely stripped to bare metal and the paint job was rebuilt from there. Hours and hours were spent aligning panels so that the car fits together with the precision of a Swiss watch. The crew spent weeks sanding and re-sanding the body until it was straight enough to act as a mirror, and only then was the fresh Medium Blue paint applied. Once it was color sanded and buffed to perfection, an NOS set of vinyl decals were sourced and installed. Yes, thats right, NOS decals, not reproductions. Got the idea that this car is something special yet?Every single piece of trim on the car is either original or an NOS replacement. Those are vintage 1970 Mustang block letters on the deck lid, original 1970 Mustang bumpers that have been given a show-quality re-chrome, and an original grille and running horse. All glass is date-code correct Carlite NOS, and its immaculate. Stainless has been straightened and polished, and the taillights are so crisp and clear that they look like they just popped out of the molds instead of being 41 years old. The front spoiler and grille are fresh out of the original boxes and even the door weatherstripping and T5 headlights are NOS. Amazing.
On a car like this, theres no question that it the engine is the original piece. Ford did not make it easy on todays enthusiasts by stamping engines with the VIN like Chrysler did, but the 302 cubic inch V8 between the fenders of this Boss has lived there since the day the car was built. Fully rebuilt to stock 290 horsepower specification, every detail is exact. From the Ford Blue paint on the block to the chrome air cleaner lid, to all the accessories, everything is as it was from the factory. Just a sample of the NOS components used on this car include the master cylinder, power steering hoses, power steering control valve, radiator hoses, smog pump and anti-backfire valve, valve covers, fan shroud, engine governor, plug wires, and even things like the core support rubber seal and the Boss 302 decal on the air cleaner! The air and oil filters are NOS, although Im pretty sure thats modern oil in the crankcase and not vintage 1970 crude, but I wouldnt be a bit surprised. Maybe youve heard about fanatics who rebuild rare, matching-numbers engines without rotating assemblies so they cant ever be damaged by, you know, driving the car, but this one fires up and runs like a new car thanks to an expert rebuild. The only reproduction piece in the entire engine bay is the duplicate Autolite battery. The list of unobtainable NOS pieces continues on the chassis. Living between the original Toploader 4-speed manual and original 3.91-geared Traction-Lok 9-inch rear end is an NOS driveshaft and U-joints. Youll also note that this car still carries its original carburetor, engine, and transmission tags, not reproductions, which is highly unusual for any car, no matter how nicely preserved. The floors have been finished the way the factory did it, with satin black paint and a little bit of overspray. Thats an NOS exhaust system, including the hangers and mufflers, and every single marking on the car was replicated using the original markings as a guide. The suspension was rebuilt using NOS control arms, ball joints, and tie rods, and the brakes feature NOS wheel cylinders in the original rear drums. Even the lug nuts holding the original Magnum 500 wheels in place are NOS lug nuts! Those F60-15 Goodyear Polyglas GT tires appear to be NOS, not reproduction items, and it boggles the mind to imagine how much they must have cost to acquire.
This unique Boss also features a rare Blue Décor interior instead of the usual blackweve seen a lot of Boss 302s recently, but never one specd like this one. The high-back bucket seats are every bit as comfortable as they look, and the detailing on the seat covers is exact in every way, from the stitching pattern to the chrome buttons. The matching blue steering wheel and dash pad are NOS pieces, of course, and the original gauges all operate as they should. A Hurst shifter was standard equipment on the Boss Mustangs, and this one is topped by an aluminum T-handle shifter as original. Carpets are correct weave and nap, and the headliner is beautifully installed. NOS rear seat belts are a nice touch. In the trunk, youll find the only other non-NOS component on the car, a reproduction trunk mat. Otherwise, thats a correct spare wheel, inflatable space-saver tire, and complete jack assembly. Documentation, as you might expect, is extensive. Theres the original owners manual and warranty booklet, original window sticker, and original maintenance handbook. We also have the dealers pre-inspection sheet, original build sheet (with a legible duplicate from Ford), as well as correspondence from the original owner. All the trophies that this car has won are also included, as well as the judging sheets I mentioned earlier.
Its easy to sum up this car: its simply the best Boss 302 Mustang in existence. The list of NOS components that went into the restoration is three pages long, and the workmanship and authentication on the car has been done by marque experts. This car is already a documented winner at the highest levels, and will be competitive indefinitely because no other car can possibly approach this level of authenticity using reproduction parts. If youve been looking for a Boss 302, either as an investment or because you appreciate the best of the best, we are proud to present the worlds finest. Values are on the way up, and this car will remain the standard by which all others are measured. In a few years, this price will be considered a bargain, so dont hesitate. Call today!
