----------
The dawn of the 21st century could quite possibly be considered the dawn of electric performance. The good ole days of cheap fossil fuels seemed to be long gone, but enthusiasts still thrived. And a new generation of gearheads started musing about flashy, technological tour de forces like this incredible Fisker Karma. The Signature Series, American technology with a touch of international style, is a pretty rare car; and it makes no qualms about catering directly to an elite clientele. Because of that, most of these luxurious showboats are sitting in quiet collections in the hands of diehard enthusiasts. And, as any green car fan will tell you, finding an owner who's willing to part with one is still pretty difficult. Well, until now… This 1-owner, 6,115-mile Signature is an exceptional example of just that!
BODYWORK/TRIM
Inspired by the beauty and grandeur of nature, the Karma wears a sculpted body that would look right at home in some parallel universe where a great American marque like Duesenberg survives and prospers. Of course, that's not by coincidence since Henrik Fisker, the car's creator, rose to prominence penning exotics like the coveted BMW Z8 and gorgeous Aston Martin V8 Vantage. Naturally, anyone with that kind of appreciation of form would build a healthy respect for environment into the core of his namesake jewel. This sedan's rich Silver Mirage paint is a smooth concoction of Diamond Dust pigment that, in addition to containing 35-55% recycled glass flake, emitted no volatile organic compounds during its application. A seamless solar glass roof, which charges the car's battery and aids in cooling, utilizes splayed cells that optimize exposure to varying sunlight. Exterior speakers emit a subtle “HZ” warning sound to alert pedestrians of the quiet cruiser's approach. And an attractive combination of Bi-xenon and LED lighting increases safety during inclement weather and nighttime travel.
ENGINE
Fisker's first offering is mechanically interesting in that it isn't really a hybrid, it isn't really an EV and it isn't really powered by a traditional internal combustion engine. Much like Chevrolet's Volt, the car claims to be a range-extended electric vehicle. Basically, that means it provides the best of both worlds. A 20 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery allows 50 miles of driving in pure electric mode, which is perfect for most people since typical commutes average less than 35 miles. If your trip requires more distance, a 175-kilowatt generator kicks in to recharge that battery. And, to combat the clichéd but very real threat of range anxiety, a 2.0 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder ultimately boosts the car's range to a solid 300 miles. Fisker calls this system EVer, for Electric Vehicle Extended Range. All told, this Signature creates an impressive 403 horsepower. Even more striking is the car's ability to create up to 959 lb./ft. of instantaneous torque. The company says it's possible to achieve 100 miles per gallon. And there are two tuning modes that provide quite different driving experiences. All-electric Stealth Mode, obviously the most commuter friendly, achieves a top speed of 95 MPH. And I.C.E.-aided Sport Mode provides a little more excitement, producing 6.3 second sprints to 60 and a top speed of 125 MPH.
DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION
All that technological whiz-bang rolls in a lightweight aluminum space frame, which makes good use of a lightweight suspension and load-leveling shocks. That fully independent foundation mixes low roll gain, high roll damping and linear steering input with sports car tuning and a low center of gravity. Electro-hydraulic power rack-and-pinion steering makes sure this relatively large car feels compact and maneuverable. Regenerative braking is provided by an ABS-enhanced electro-hydraulic brake-by-wire system, which squeezes 4 and 6-piston Brembo Monobloc calipers around vented rotors. And a single-ratio transmission and limited-slip differential spin 255/35 front and 285/35 rear Goodyear Eagle F1s around 22-inch Circuit Blade wheels.
INTERIOR
Probably the most striking aspect of this future classic is it's luxurious Mojave Tri-Tone interior. Unlike the burlap sacks and earth tone digs you see at local boutiques, this cockpit proves that conservation doesn't have to be a code word for cheap and boring. Firm bucket seats wear supple leather hides that were prepped in a self-sufficient, closed-loop manufacturing facility. A classy dash, which is trimmed in reclaimed Deep Sunken White Oak, features four simple buttons: one to start the car, one to lock the car, one for the car's hazard lights and one for an electronic glove box. Fisker's Command Center touchscreen takes care of climate control, audio and navigation needs via variable engagement modes that bank on the driver's experience with infotainment technology. Speaking of audio equipment, this EcoSport cockpit features a 6-channel, 8-speaker sound system that marries Bluetooth, satellite and MP3 capability to voice-activated, turn-by-turn navigation. The aforementioned climate control includes dual-zone air conditioning and heated front and rear seats. And redundant steering wheel buttons, keyless ignition, eight airbags, a rearview camera and HomeLink wireless enhance safety and convenience.
