In order to get the kind of exclusive and cool metal we're used dealing in, we have to have a pretty broad scope. But, every once in a while, we unearth a quality gem in our own back yard. That's exactly what happened with this awesome Chevy pickup. Owned by the same person for close to 52 years, this national award-winner places emphasis on history and durability. Sporting an original, 216 cubic inch 6-cylinder and correct 3-speed transmission, the truck has always been a solid runner. As the beneficiary of an extensive body-off restoration, which was conducted by the aforementioned owner and his wife, it's clean, capable and ready to cruise Main Street. And, if you're a fun-loving enthusiast who's looking for an impressive classic, it's just the haul you've been fishing for.
BODYWORK/TRIM
Spending the last 52 years in the hands of its second owner, this striking Chevy has been meticulously rebuilt to preserve all the innate appeal of '40s-era steel. In 2004, even though the truck was a clean and fully sorted cruiser, that owner and his wife decided to embark on a 2-year restoration, which culminated in a rich combination of blue and black 2-stage. Details like a stainless wiper, fresh chrome trim, a color-keyed mirror, and red and silver striping highlighted the couple's impressive attention to detail. And, in 2006 and 2007, the truck claimed awards at AACA's Charlotte AutoFair.
ENGINE
Fold the truck's hinged hood and you'll find an original 216 cubic inch inline 6-cylinder that wears a date correct “KB” assembly stamp. Introduced for use in large platforms, and regarded as one of the all-time great Chevrolet powerplants, the 216 is a favorite among vintage GM truck buyers because of its simple design, adequate power and excellent durability. A petite Carter carburetor and old school air cleaner combine with a tagged Delco-Remy starter, a tagged Delco-Remy generator, a beefy Harrison radiator and proven Belden plug wires to keep the engine clean and functional. And items like a finished firewall, a vintage horn and traditional gray skin ensure the mill remains impressive to look at.
DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION
Crawling under this classy bowtie reveals a clean frame and straight floorpans that are no stranger to Saturday afternoon road trips. Power is put to the pavement through a traditional 3-speed transmission, which is tied to a driver friendly rear end. Correct leaf springs and drum brakes occupy all four corners of that chassis, mixing rugged road prowess with firm and solid stops. A single-pipe exhaust system, which is wired to a small muffler, runs the whole length of the truck. And everything rolls on familiar steel wheels, which turn 6.00-16 Nancos around black paint, silver pinstripes and “CHEVROLET” branded hubcaps.
INTERIOR
When you pop this pickup's doors, you'll find a simple, color-keyed cockpit that's full of utilitarian charm. A brown bench seat complements a brown headliner and black floor mat. A large-diameter steering wheel spins around a straight shifter, a vintage hand brake and fully restored gauges. Warm heat and a tilting windshield take country drives from civilized to adventuresome. And behind the cockpit, a fully restored bed founds gorgeous wood planks in mirrored stainless hardware.
