In America's vast and ever expanding car culture you can find many different definitions of cool. There are rarities with long stories and big exclusivity that are bought to be shown, talked about and referenced. There are purpose-built performance machines which are tailored to specific activities or events. There are chrome-laden classics that honor years, eras and even lifestyles which have come and gone. And then there are pieces like this 14K mile Range Rover Sport that are stylish, luxurious and just a blast to drive! Fully loaded, and equipped with a roster of modifications, this technological tour de force is one of the most comfortable and capable SUVs ever built. And, thanks to a passionate owner and excellent maintenance, it's just as versatile on the show field as it is in the urban jungle. If you're looking for a cool cruiser that's fun, unique and ready for cross-country sightseeing, this highly polished Rover is just your style!
BODYWORK/TRIM
Born from practicality and necessity, the Range Rover began life as a series of concepts and test mules that were branded under a phantom company called Velar. The truck's rugged construction and large payload proved extremely useful when it came to transporting people, towing equipment and traversing pretty much anything that wouldn't move. And eventually, circa 1970, Rover decided to market its proven creation directly to civilian consumers. This 14,592-mile L322, thoroughly modified by Ultimate Auto of Orlando, Florida, carries solid, original sheetmetal that's been fitted with a Kahn wide body kit, sprayed in a custom combination of black and silver paint, sealed in a durable clearcoat shell and protected with a full set of plastic chip guards. Presently, there isn't a dent or crease anywhere to be found on its classic, wagon-inspired profile; and that profile's wet-looking finish displays a spectacular shine that's been carefully maintained.
Aesthetically this top-of-the-line Land Rover is pretty predictable, but I mean that in a good way. It's an excellent incarnation of the tough, boxy persona which populated the sports utility vehicle segment until the early part of this century. At the truck's nose, a monochromatic Strut grille rides between a Kahn bumper, a full array of artfully modern lights and a re-envisioned “ROVER” hood script. At its top, a bright silver roof caps dark-tinted glass that's sealed between body-matched mirrors, a shark fin antenna and two tasteful rear spoilers. At its sides, smooth vertical panels hang power running boards below slick Strut fender vents, small smoked marker lights and body-matched door handles. And at the truck's tail, a traditional liftgate props a small back up camera above a stealth radar jammer, color-keyed tail lights, a second Kahn bumper and professionally finished exhaust tips.
ENGINE
The neatly trimmed 4.2 liter under this SUV's hood is Ford's familiar dual overhead cam, supercharged AJ V8. Producing a healthy 390 horsepower and a robust 410 lb./ft. of torque, the storied mill utilizes an Eaton belt-driven blower, fixed camshaft phasing and stronger jet-cooled pistons, to carry its rather heavy shell to brisk 7.2 second 60 MPH sprints and an electronically limited top speed of 140 MPH. Hoist the two-tone bonnet and you'll find an exceptionally maintained engine bay that's seen only 1,824 miles per year since it left the showroom. And judging by how clean and well-kept everything is, I'd venture to say this SUV was either used as a sunny day cruiser or, at the very least, kept in a garage most of its life. Fire the smooth powerplant up and it runs clean, purring like a kitten between lion-esque roars that directly correspond to your right foot meeting the floor. And thanks to an excellent combination of flat-out power and responsive acceleration, there's no wonder this motor has forged a reputation as one of the most versatile performance pieces ever produced.
DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION
Under this L322's floor, rock-solid BMW engineering provides a luxurious ride that, while not too firm, also doesn't share the wobbly traits of a traditional body-on-frame workhorse. One squeeze of the throttle and the shiftable 6-speed automatic transmission seamlessly and steadily sends power to an electronic differential that quickly sets you on your way. Need to stop? No worries; a well-balanced four wheel disc brake system utilizes standard ABS, solid rotors and silver Brembo calipers to provide a reliable, drama-free escape from virtually any speed. At the center of the truck, a Kahn dual exhaust system supplies an aggressive, but formal roar. At the corners of the truck, 22-inch Giovanna wheels spin 305/35 Pirelli Scorpion Zeros. And when you're carving community curves and tearing up suburban turf, standard four wheel drive, an adjustable air suspension and Land Rover's famous Terrain Response system ensure you arrive at your destination quickly and safely.
INTERIOR
Inside this sophisticated SUV you'll find a black leather interior that's world class luxury at its finest. I'm guessing nobody has ever used the back seats for anything, least of all the remote controlled DVD entertainment system; and the front seats, perforated and reverse-stitched thrones which feature attractive suede inserts, show virtually no wear at all. In front of those seats crystal-clear electro luminescent gauges are laid out in traditional fashion, with simple dials and pointers framing a bright driver information center that's an integral part of a modern dash. There's rain sensing wipers, a giant glass sunroof, power front seats with memory, a GPS navigation system, Harmon/Kardon speakers, a $12K Audison/Hertz sound system, power EVERYTHING and pretty much any other neat option parent company Tata Motors could imagine. Between the seats, a modern console features bold black accents that, along with the trim on the doors and dash, has been color-keyed to the truck's custom exterior paint. At the sides of the seats, intricate door panels lace their way into suede-covered pillars, and ultimately, a suede headliner. And beneath the seats, like-new carpet is protected by heavy duty rubber floor mats. In front of the driver, a black-rimmed steering wheel feels much more substantial than competitor's factory attire. And behind the passenger's, hardware for the aforementioned Audison/Hertz sound system has been so cleanly integrated that there's still ample room for a monthly Crate & Barrel shopping spree.
