----------
In the muscle car world, you won't find many Saab meets. But that's ok, because a cool car is a cool car no matter what group it appeals to or who identifies with it. In fact, one of the coolest things about this 26,640-mile Saab survivor is the idea that it isn't for everyone and that you probably won't see anything like it at your local Cars & Coffee. And that statement is, along with future collectability, pretty much guaranteed by the fact that this turbo drop-top is 1 of only 288 Springtime In Sweden models ever commissioned. So, if you're in the market for a unique ride that can be driven and enjoyed to the fullest extent, you've landed on your next classic!
HISTORY
In 1988, an invigorated Saab-Scania was doing pretty well thanks in no small part to its 288 American dealers. To celebrate its success, and build further Esprit De Corps, the company invited those dealers to Sweden and announced the production of a special edition Springtime in Sweden convertible. The SIS package was simple in execution, taking turbocharged, black on gray 900s, adding 3-spoke wheels and Aero-like bodywork, and affixing small badges to the cars' glovebox doors. But that simplicity didn't downplay exclusivity, as each dealer was given the opportunity to purchase only one of either 4 automatic or 284 5-speed units. According to a copy of this 900's Certificate of Origin, it was the only car allotted to Steven Motor Company of Tacoma, Washington. For the next 26 years, it was kept at the dealership for the purpose of display. And finally, in 2014, it was passed to its second owner who, thus far, has enjoyed approximately 400 weekend miles.
BODYWORK
Looking over this executive class Saab, it's easy to agree that the car was certainly one of the best efforts of the Analog Era. It makes the most of its compact size, with a coat of glossy black paint that's topped by clean black canvas. Given its low mileage, the car rarely had a chance to incur damage, resulting in tight panels that are backed by a clean CarFax report. And fit and finish is predictably good, with narrow and consistent shut lines all the way around.
DRIVETRAIN
Power comes courtesy of the brand's intercooled, 2.0 liter B201 4-cylinder, which provides an excellent mix of quick thrust and thrifty fuel economy. As mentioned before, this convertible is one of the 284 SIS cars equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission. A traditional independent front and solid axle rear suspension combines with a tidy 99-inch wheelbase to soak up bumps and carve the twisties. Naturally, that suspension is headed by factory power steering. Likewise, brakes are power assisted discs at all four corners. Outside of those brakes, snazzy 3-spoke wheels spin 185/65R15 Pirelli P4s. Exhaust flows through a single pipe setup that appears to be original equipment. And overall, the chassis is essentially what you'd expect from a well-kept cruiser: solid, clean and layered in factory charm.
INTERIOR
The car's monochromatic, leather-lined interior is typical of the cockpits found in most premium European offerings. Tall bucket seats are comfortable and supportive. The silver-trimmed dash is in excellent condition, hanging an all-important Springtime in Sweden emblem beside factory climate control and original Clarion audio. A simple steering wheel nonchalantly embodies Saab's 'Born From Jets' technicality. Everything works as it should, from the unique ignition switch to the factory power windows. And if you don't feel at least a little stylish behind the wheel of this drop-top, it's certainly not the car's fault.

One of the most frequent questions we get asked is: “What are the big collector's items of the next 25 to 30 years?” While no one can answer that with absolute certainty, we can't help but think cars like this rare 900 are poised to gain a lot of popularity. As a 2-owner example of a dealer-order specialty that had a total production run of only 288 units, this drop-top certainly has exclusivity locked down. And when we start talking dynamics, it was one of the last all-driver all the time offerings of the prized Analog Era. So, what are you waiting for? Call your friends at RK Motors Charlotte and try something a little different!
