550 RWHP Mustang GT Conv. Custom SC 4.6L V8 5 speed A/C Powerful Stereo
From rare Shelbys to exclusive SVOs, the Mustang camp has always spoiled its fans with an impressive portfolio of unique offerings that become instant classics almost as soon as they hit the showroom floor. And while beasts like the legendary Boss 429 and storied Cobra R add to the marque's performance legacy, cars like this deviant GT convertible remain the enthusiast's bread and butter. Wrapping killer performance and excellent usability in positively head-turning aesthetics, this cool drop-top sports 550 horsepower of supercharged Mod Motor. And if you're looking for some choice modern muscle to show and enjoy, it's a great candidate!
APPEARANCE
The 2003 model year saw Ford working within their famed New Edge design language. Authored by Jack Telnack, former VP of Ford Design, the theme brought intersecting arcs, surface tension and an array of new creases to the company's passenger car lineup. For the Mustang, it meant a visual return to muscle. First-generation influence is obvious from all sides, but a mix of chiseled lines and sharply curved angles allow the car to maintain its modern identity. This one-of-a-kind GT, a $120K SEMA build that was completed by Widow Industries, wears a nicely maintained coat of Dark Shadow Gray 2-stage. Assembly work was first-rate, so panel fitment is great all around. And when the weather acts up, a Black convertible top comes straight to the rescue, protecting a custom interior while complementing the car's glossy hue.
Of course, there's more to an exterior than paint. This drop-top features a long list of accessories that are sure to thrill any late-model Mustang fan. Those bolt-ons begin with an aggressive Cervini bumper, which anchors bright fog lamps beneath smoked headlights and gothic grille décor that's centered in a Mach 1 grille delete. Behind that fascia, a Cervini hood flows to a painted cowl, which founds capped wipers in front of a tinted greenhouse. At the sides of that glass, painted Cobra mirrors reflect a short antenna, aggressive cove scoops and extended Cervini rockers. And at the back of the car, a shaved and airbrushed decklid hangs a tall Cervini spoiler over smoked taillights and a second Cervini bumper.
POWER
The Mustang has long been the champion of budget performance cars, and much of that has to do with the rock-solid engines Ford bolts between its fenders. Like the rest of the car, they serve as an excellent springboard for incredible personalization. Pop this GT's hood and you'll find a freshly rebuilt example of Dearborn's venerable 4.6 liter Mod Motor. Bolted, sorted and teased to 550 rear-wheel horsepower by our friends at Mass Acceleration Motorsports, the mill thumps as a trusted ally on the highway, drag strip or road course. At the top of the engine, a polished Paxton NOVI-2000 supercharger bridges the gap between a polished intake and custom air tubes. That intake floods ported and polished heads, which hang high performance cams over upgraded internals that include a balanced rotating assembly. At the bottom of that assembly, a tough steel crank plays well with an aluminum girdle and an 8-quart oil pan that's complete with a windage tray. At the front of that pan, polished serpentine components spin a polished alternator over an assortment of smooth ancillaries. Enlarged fuel injectors combine with hot MSD ignition and an enlarged Mass Airflow Sensor to ensure power is smooth and immediate. Ceramic-coated Bassani headers make sure everything breathes well. And plumbed Nitrous Oxide serves to cool the car's intercooler. The showy powerplant is extremely tidy, splitting visual allure between highly polished surfacing and brilliant Ford Blue detailing. And, if anyone wants to take performance from a 10 to an 11, Snow Performance methanol injection is present and armed.
POWER MANAGEMENT
Park this pony on a lift and you'll find a weather-free undercarriage that frames a roster of high quality mods with solid, factory pans. At the center of those floors, a trusty Tremec 5-speed makes excellent use of a lightweight Fidanza flywheel, a tough Centerforce clutch and a polished Ford Racing driveshaft. That tube funnels power to a familiar 8.8-inch third member, which spins big, 3.73 gears between 31-spline axles, an Auburn posi-traction differential and a polished inspection cover. Handling and overall refinement were a central focus, as evidenced by the car's fully massaged suspension. Up front, a powder-coated Steeda sway bar leads a powder-coated Maximum Motorsports K-Member, which is finished with powder-coated Maximum Motorsports control arms and adjustable Koni shocks. Out back, a second set of adjustable Konis cages a second powder-coated Steeda sway bar, billet control arms and quality Eibach springs. Those bones turn thanks to power rack-and-pinion steering. Stops are provided by power-assisted Baer calipers, which squeeze 12-inch drilled and slotted rotors behind 13-inch drilled and slotted rotors. Spent gases roar through ceramic-coated Bassani pipes, which center an X-shaped crossover in front of rowdy mufflers. At the corners, 18-inch Saleen wheels spin 245/40 Nitto NT555 Extreme ZRs in front of 295/35 Nitto NT05s. And even the details are first rate, with items like stainless fuel lines and powder-coated subframe connectors capping the car's acute build.
COMFORT
Open the doors and you'll find a tastefully customized interior that wraps modern style around modern convenience. Corbeau GTS buckets stretch swaths of black leather and red vinyl under a familiar Saleen light bar. Under those seats, rich carpet floats Ford Racing floor mats between custom sills and a custom fire extinguisher. At the center of that rug, a detailed console founds a dressed Steeda shifter behind Pioneer touchscreen audio. That head unit controls a monster sound system, which includes dual Crossfire amplifiers and a trio of 12-inch Crossfire DB3 subwoofers. At the front of the car, a 2-tone dash hangs white-face telemetry between metal foot pedals, Auto Meter accessory gauges and controls for factory air conditioning. At the sides of that dash, 2-tone door panels, founded on power windows and power door locks, mimic the rest of the car's billet-tinged cockpit. In front of the driver, an upgraded Cobra steering wheel spins a leather-wrapped rim around a factory tilt column. And behind the cockpit, a custom trunk hides dual batteries behind custom fire extinguishers and a big nitrous bottle.
