Shaq's Custom Challenger R/T Convertible 5.7L HEMI V8 Automatic 5,117 Miles
It's a great time to be a Dodge fan! Not only did the 21st century see the return of the brash Charger and top dog Challenger, it also spawned a new generation of MoPar performance dubbed Street & Racing Technology. But even with countless special editions, and Chrysler's varying degrees of Hemi-fueled fury, Dodge owners are pretty much used to the fact that someone else is going to show up with virtually the same wheels. Hey, it's not a bad thing that MoPars are so popular. But, then again, part of the appeal of having a special car is the guarantee of it actually being special. Enter this virtually new Challenger R/T. Built for NBA super star Shaquille O'Neal, this surly coupe takes all the torque-rich goodness of Dodge's preeminent pavement pounder and throws in a unique, top-down driving experience courtesy of Drop Top Customs. If you're looking to pick up a modern, hassle-free hot rod that's loaded with tons of cool technology, here's your nouveau classic!
EVOLUTION OF THE GREATS
Beginning life at Chrysler's excellent Brampton manufacturing facility, this Challenger has roamed a mere 5,117 miles in the hands of one of the greatest basketball players of all time. Pull the car under the lights and you'll find crisp Billet Clear Coat that's been dressed in sinister Hemi banners. Below that lust worthy canvas, original sheetmetal fits precisely, displaying excellent build quality. A close look down that slab-sided fuselage reveals not so much as a dent or ding anywhere. And it all adds up to one slick modern MoPar that wraps world-beating performance in a substantial sense of style!
Challengers have never been safe havens for the meek. And they're almost morally offensive to folks who like their cars as bland as rice cakes. So, as if to bully critics into submission, someone optioned this coupe to just south of audacious using a full array of gnarly aesthetics. At the front of the car, black-on-black grilles hang monochromatic “CHALLENGER R/T” badging between high intensity headlights, projector fog lamps and an aggressive chin spoiler. Behind that spoiler, a tall profile founds subtle “HEMI” badging between a matte fuel filler, Satin Black rockers and a tight convertible top that was retrofitted by Drop Top Customs of High Springs, Florida. That top folds between a striped hood, factory-tint glass and a Satin Black deck spoiler that's fitted with a requisite Center High Mount Stop Lamp. And beneath that spoiler, a glossy, “DODGE” branded valance hangs LED split taillights above a black-trimmed bumper and polished exhaust tips.
HEMI POWER
Of course, there's only one question that comes to mind with any Dodge muscle car – Does it have a Hemi? At the heart of this Challenger, a stout, 5.7 liter Hemi V8 utilizes 375 horsepower to transform what's essentially a comfortable touring coupe into a heavyweight stoplight slayer. While not as brutally moody as the 426 Elephant that immediately springs to mind, the Gen III is an award-winning motor that features a great mix of old school power and modern technology. Aesthetically, Chrysler's install is exceptionally clean, presenting well under a beefy Drop Top Customs shock tower brace. And, best of all, this is a Hemi that'll fire up in any weather, drive thousands of miles before anyone needs to turn its bolts, and probably lay waste to any old school muscle car that's brave enough to pick a fight.
BIG MOVES
Straight from Auburn Hills, Chrysler's LX platform was a solid foundation that could easily spawn multiple rear and all-wheel drive applications. And when this Challenger's engineering team bolted up a Mercedes S-Class front suspension, threw in a Mercedes E-Class rear suspension and re-christened it “LC”, they created the perfect blend of American attitude and European road manners. The powerful Hemi commands eight forward gears through a tough ZF automatic, which twists a trusty anti-spin differential around friendly 3.08 gears. Power-assisted steering ensures you'll want to do more than make traditional NASCAR lefts. Braking comes courtesy of power-assisted calipers that, with the help of standard anti-lock software, clamp a quartet of vented rotors. Spent gases exit through a throaty, true-dual exhaust system. And at the corners, upsized blades spin 245/45ZR20 Goodyear Eagle RS-As.
BIG TIME COMFORT
Look inside this Dodge and you'll find a comfortable and stylish cockpit that's ready for long road trips and plenty of summertime fun. Supple Katzkin seats, which, like the quality Haartz top, were installed by Florida's Drop Top Customs, feature 18 inches of adjustment for the car's driver. The rear seats were built to match with custom tailoring of the cushions to accept the extended seat travel. A driver-oriented dash features highly detailed telemetry, dual-zone climate control and Chrysler's lauded Performance Pages technology. Uconnect infotainment mixes convenient Bluetooth connectivity and reliable satellite radio with crisp Alpine audio. A French-stitched console centers an attractive shifter between “DODGE” branded floor mats. Contoured side panels front smooth power mirrors, requisite power windows and standard power door locks. In front of the driver, a leather-wrapped steering wheel spins factory cruise control and small shift paddles around a tilting column. And naturally, all the luxuries you'd expect in a high dollar muscle car are present and accounted for, including ParkView and Enter-N-Go keyless entry.
