Looking for a timeless Detroit superstar that mixes macho swagger with some of the best lines to ever prowl Main Street? Here's your next American idol!
BODYWORK/TRIM
Professionally refinished in correct Cortez Silver 2-stage that's decked in traditional Tuxedo Black war paint, this Chevy benefitted from a ground-up restoration that was completed by the folks at Sugarloaf, Pennsylvania's Tony's Muscle Cars. That detailed rebuild married solid flanks to a few fresh panels, which created a storied profile that features better-than-factory alignment. Doors were adjusted with precision, vertical components were centered in their respective openings, and pliable weather stripping was carefully integrated. And in late 2012, this Chevy debuted as a road-ready cruiser that carries every characteristic of a high quality, show worthy muscle car.
For 1970, the facelifted Chevelle moved an impressive 634K units. Not only did that high-profile success earn GM big money, it also solidified the nameplate as part of Chevy's oft romanticized 'golden era'. At the front of this coupe, a “CHEVELLE” branded grille hangs a bold “SS” emblem, stainless-trimmed headlights and a polished bumper. Opposite that bumper, a correct Cowl Induction Hood anchors correct lanyards at the base of factory-tint glass that's seated in straight stainless frames. At the base of those frames, polished mirrors reflect chrome door handles, which ride a stainless-trimmed profile that's branded with correct, LS6-spec fender badging. And at the back of the car, a second polished bumper hangs a standard Super Sport inlay between clear brake lights, a fresh “Chevelle by Chevrolet” trunk script and polished Pypes exhaust tips.
ENGINE
In the realm of classic cars, there are experts who have built entire careers on determining the originality of components, and stamps dating those components. And when it comes to car's like LS6 Chevelles, that level of authenticity goes a long way. RK Motors Charlotte takes authenticity very seriously, and we put a lot of research in to the cars we sell. All that said, this Chevelle's polished LS6 is one of those rare cases where, despite careful inspection by numerous people, we simply aren't sure if it's original or not. Here's what we do know: the engine is a correct 1970 block that wears a correct 3963512 casting number. It's also stamped correctly, displaying an LS6/M22 “CRV” suffix code next to a matching partial VIN. However, regarding the mill being original, we decided to play it safe and stick to “correct”.
At the top of the Chevy Orange block, a polished and decaled air filter feeds a big Holley 4-barrel, which is sequenced to fresh stainless fluid lines and a reliable mechanical pump. That air/fuel mixture floods a lightweight Winters intake on the way to beefy Chevrolet heads, which are topped with polished valve covers and a stainless oil cap. At the back of those heads, a traditional points distributor shoots spark through loomed Packard TV R Suppression cables. Below those cables, coated long-tube headers funnel spent gases in to throaty, true-dual pipes. At the front of those tubes, factory pulleys spin a rebuilt alternator opposite leak-free power steering. In front of those pulleys, a decaled radiator circulates coolant around a correct fan via pliable GM hoses and old school tower clamps. And the car's authentic, restoration-fresh appearance is maintained through high quality detailing that includes a Delco-topped battery and a familiar Delco Moraine brake booster.
DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION
One look under this sturdy cruiser reveals a solid chassis that's every bit as road-ready as the stout 396. That big block powers a tough Muncie 4-speed, which hangs an M22 assembly stamp opposite a matching partial VIN. That transmission spins a familiar 12-bolt axle, which is branded with a correct, LS6-spec assembly stamp. That hot drivetrain rides a tagged F41 Sport Suspension, which mixes factory power steering with power front disc and rear drum brakes. Exhaust flows from the aforementioned headers to polished pipes, which center an X-shaped crossover in front of polished Pypes Race Pro mufflers. The body's rust-free floors feature clean Satin Black pigment that was likely bestowed during their detailed restoration. And at the corners of those floors, 14-inch Super Sport Wheels spin F70-14 Firestone Wide Oval Super Sports around stainless trim rings and SS center caps.
INTERIOR
Featuring a host of fresh interior components, this coupe's all-business cockpit is splendidly crisp. Its retrofitted bench and bucket seats are firm to the touch, showing no signs of significant wear. In front of those seats, a straight Super Sport dash hangs optional Deluxe Telemetry beside modern air conditioning, sly Retro Radio audio and GM-branded Auto Meter accessory gauges. Below that dash, a factory console floats a polished Muncie shifter on clean carpet that's protected by color-keyed floor mats. At the sides of that carpet, pick-free door panels center classy stainless trim and requisite “SS” emblems on bright handles and pliable armrests. And in front of the driver, a brushed Rally Wheel laps stainless-trimmed foot pedals.
