Frame Up Built Road Runner Restomod Ray Barton 472ci/796hp HEMI V8 5 Spd A/C
We're all familiar with the term 'resto-mod' and how it gets thrown around to describe cars which 1) haven't been restored all that well and 2) haven't been modded all that much. But, simply put, the true theme of the resto-mod movement is: the best of everything. And if there was ever a textbook example of a true-to-form resto-mod, this Plymouth Road Runner has to be it. Backing 472 cubic inches of Ray Barton Hemi with an upgraded suspension, a row-it-yourself Tremec transmission and a quality restoration, this brutal coupe is ready to rock!
After spending most of its life as a clean driver, this awesome B-Body was the perfect starting point for a professional, ground-up restoration that mixed a killer engine with classic MoPar attitude. The car's straight body, which, according to its restorer, is all-original metal, was drenched in brilliant red 2-stage paint. Polished bumpers and factory mirrors joined a customized 8 BBL hood and subtle “road runner” scripts to lend just the right amount of detail. And today, this primed and polished Plymouth sits as one super slick road warrior that features a perfect combination of no-nonsense looks and vicious street manners.
Yank the four hood pins and you'll find a ground-pounding 472 cubic inch Ray Barton Hemi V8, pushing out a whopping 796 horsepower, that takes this big red beast from very appealing to MUST HAVE almost as fast as it transitions from flattering to flat out scary! At the top of that mill, polished, low-profile air cleaners feed dual 770cfm Holley carburetors, which, with the help of a small Auto Gage pressure gauge, send a nice mix of air and fuel into an aluminum cross-ram intake. At the sides of that intake, aluminum Stage V Hemi heads bridge the gap between polished Moroso breathers, unique Ray Barton valve covers and tough 10.5 to 1 compression. That compression gets sparked by an MSD Pro-Billet distributor, which sequences a hot MSD coil with loomed and color-keyed Moroso plug wires. At the front of that distributor, a Billet Specialties Tru Trac serpentine drive spins a polished Powermaster alternator opposite a polished AC compressor. Cooling comes courtesy of a polished Be Cool radiator, which makes excellent use of billet hose connectors, electric puller fans and a polished cap. Oiling is greatly aided by a Moroso deep-sump oil pan. Exhaust is excised through ceramic-coated, long-tube headers. And overall, everything from the car's braided fluid lines and billet steering reservoir to its billet master cylinder and requisite Road Runner horn, is well-planned and professionally executed.
Like its slick exterior and clean engine bay, the bottom of this Plymouth is a great combination of past and present. The powerful engine kicks a McLeod hydraulic clutch, which twists a tough Tremec 5-speed that hangs a coated scattershield in front of a narrowed Moser Dana 60. That pumpkin pushes a heavily upgraded rear-clip, which mixes monoleaf springs and CalTracs traction bars with welded subframe connectors and adjustable QA-1 shocks. Those components are led by a Bill Riley Motorsports AlterKtion front-clip, which complements a performance sway bar with tubular control arms and chrome-trimmed coil-over shocks. Turns come courtesy of Flaming River power rack-and-pinion steering. Four power-assisted calipers clamp drilled and slotted rotors. Coated exhaust employs an H-shaped crossover in front of coated Dynomax mufflers and polished stainless tips. And torque meets the pavement through polished Boyd Coddington Smoothies, which spin 215/70R15 BF Goodrich Radial T/As in front of 325/50R15 M&H Racemaster drag radials.
Counter to today's obsession with technology and convenience, it seems old school American muscle cars only needed simple stitching, a bit of bright trim and essential instrumentation to strike a perfect balance of 'instantly classic' and 'perpetually cool'. Behind this Road Runner's doors, a tasteful combination of factory and aftermarket seating highlights a cool mix of suede and ultraleather upholstery. A custom dash founds AutoMeter Pro Comp telemetry next to pushbutton ignition, controls for modern air conditioning and a crisp Sony CD player. A long, wood-trimmed console toggles a Pistol Grip Shifter in front of switches for the car's power windows. Quality Dynamat insulation backs upscale carpet, which floats color-keyed floor mats between billet foot pedals, custom side panels and retrofitted shoulder belts. And the driver spins a polished and half-wrapped steering wheel around a tilting Ididit column.
Are you looking for big power, good handling and a tailored appearance that's fit to impress? Congratulations, you've found your next classic! Fully sorted, road-ready muscle cars don't get much cooler than this awesome Road Runner. And, whether you choose to drive it or show it, this is one no-excuses MoPar that's sure to turn heads!
