Ground Up Restored Chevelle SS Hardtop 396ci V8 4 speed
Chevrolet did a lot right in the 1960s, especially when it came to the Camaro, Chevelle and Corvette. That's why pedigreed Chevelles continue to be some of the hottest metal on the collector car market. This impressive, first-generation coupe has all the right ingredients to bring big value and even bigger appeal. For starters, it's an authentic Chevelle Super Sport that features a numbers-matching 396/4-speed drivetrain. It also combines correct Marina Blue paint with a correct Black interior. And best of all, this Chevy has benefitted from a 4-year, professional restoration that literally left no bolt unturned! Looking for a timeless Detroit superstar that mixes macho swagger with some of the best lines to ever prowl Main Street? Here's your next American idol!
AS IT WAS
Professionally refinished in correct Marina Blue 2-stage that was sprayed by Collision Bike Works of Indian Trail, North Carolina, this Chevelle is the beneficiary of a fresh, ground-up restoration that was conducted over the course of four years. At the front of the car, a familiar Super Sport grille hangs a bold “SS396” emblem between a clean “CHEVELLE” header script and a polished bumper that's finished with bright parking lamps. Opposite that bumper, a correct Super Sport Hood fronts factory-tint glass that's seated behind polished wipers and straight frames. At the base of those frames, a polished bowtie mirror reflects polished door handles, ornate profile badging and correct Super Sport rocker trim. And at the back of the car, a striking Super Sport valance centers a second “SS396” emblem between clear brake lights and a second polished bumper that's finished with bright reverse lamps.
ORIGINAL, BUT BETTER
Pop the hood and you'll find an original, 396 cubic inch Chevrolet big block that's been fully rebuilt, completely restored and thoroughly sorted by Midland Engine Machine of Midland, North Carolina. At the top of the Chevy Orange mill, a polished air cleaner feeds oxygen to a reliable Quadrajet 4-barrel that's centered behind a fresh stainless fuel line. That air/fuel mixture travels into a painted Q-JET intake, which rides between correct heads and polished valve covers. Those heads, finished with hardened valve seats, cap a hotted cam, which breathes through fully restored exhaust manifolds. At the back of those tubes, a traditional points distributor shoots spark through fresh Packard TV R Suppression cables. And in front of those cables, a 4-core radiator swills water through pliable GM hoses and correct tower clamps. According to this Chevelle's owner, all that street-pounding hardware adds up to 415 dyno-proven horsepower. And naturally, the engine fronts a 1967-exclusive 3902406 casting number with a correct “ED” suffix stamp and a matching 170508 partial VIN.
JUST THE PERFORMANCE
One look under this storied classic reveals a solid chassis that's every bit as road-ready as the stout 396. That big block powers an original Muncie 4-speed, which hangs a correct 3885010 casting number and a Muncie (P) assembled on February (B) 15th (15), 1967 (7) build stamp opposite a matching 170508 partial VIN. That transmission spins a familiar 12-bolt axle, which is equipped with predictable 3.31 gears. That buff drivetrain rides a tagged F41 Sport Suspension, which mixes manual steering with manual drum brakes. Exhaust flows through aluminized pipes and throaty turbo mufflers. The body's rust-free floors feature even Satin Black pigment that's virtually spotless. And at the corners of those floors, stainless-trimmed Rally Wheels spin 215/70R14 BF Goodrich Radial T/A redlines.
AS IT WERE
Installed by Teddy Baucom's Auto Repair of Indian Trail, North Carolina, this coupe's all-business cockpit is splendidly crisp. Its correct vinyl seats are firm to the touch, showing no signs of significant wear. In front of those seats, a straight Super Sport dash frames sly direct-fit audio. Below that dash, fresh carpet floats a polished shifter between pliable side panels. And the driver spins a brushed Rally Wheel.
In 1967, this Chevelle was some of the best performance your money could buy. Currently, it's one of the best investments on the muscle car market. If you're on the hunt for a first class collectible that doubles as a killer pavement bruiser, your search is officially over. Call your friends at RK Motors Charlotte and claim this sweet Super Sport.
