Ground Up Restored Documented Mach 1 R-Code 428 CJ V8 Automatic
When you ask most Ford enthusiasts what their favorite Mustang is, the '69 fastback is always at the top of the list. Between its slick hip lines and slightly larger stature, it was the 'stang that officially laid rubber across the grave of the “secretary car” stigma. Production numbers weren't exactly low, but when an example like this authentic R-code Mach 1 comes along, we're always happy to clear a spot in our showroom. Wrapping a cool color combination around a correct Ram-Air 428 Cobra Jet V8, a proven C6 automatic transmission and enough appeal to draw a crowd anytime it sits still, this Ford is an awesome twist on a can't-miss favorite. And if you're looking for the perfect first-generation pony car that'll rule local shows and make the best of your summer weekends, it's an excellent candidate for your next classic!
1 OF 34
One of only 34 automatic R-code sportsroof Mustangs optioned with awesome Aztec Aqua paint, this storied Ford has benefitted from a detailed, ground-up restoration in which no bolt was left unturned. That paint is augmented with a familiar satin hood stripe and traditional Mach 1 tickers. Those aesthetics coat solid sheetmetal that displays impressive fit and finish. And to ensure this pony is sure to stand out from the herd, everything's been buffed to a show-stopping shine!
For 1967, Ford rolled out a bigger, more muscular pony car. And the 1968 and '69 model years saw that design subtly refined. The front end was cleaned up thanks to a deletion of horizontal grille bars. That brightwork was replaced with a single band of trim surrounding the grille, which, on this coupe, also houses driving lamps. Above that grille, a shaker hood features stainless lanyards and a small, “CobraJET” branded scoop. Along the car's profile, body-matched Sport Mirrors complement traditional quarter scoops and highly detailed B-pillar emblems. Below the roofline, show-quality stainless edges like-new glass and retrofitted window louvers. And when you follow the fastback rearward, a third Mach 1 stripe cages a broad ”MUSTANG” script, triple-segment taillights and a pony-branded fuel filler above small reverse lamps and quad-outlet exhaust tips.
COBRA JET
Back in 1969, if you wanted a Mustang and you wanted to slay stoplights, you wanted Ford's killer Cobra Jet V8. Lift this fastback's scooped hood and you'll find 428 cubic inches of correct Cobra Jet big block that's been completely rebuilt from its spry Holley carburetor all the way down to its Ford Blue oil pan. Long regarded as one of the most iconic mills ever created, factory-supplied Cobra Jets utilized a strengthened medium block, heavy-duty rods, a nodular crankshaft, and larger valves and ports to produce an advertised 335 horsepower. At the top of the engine, ram air cowl induction centers a “COBRA JET” branded shaker over a cast iron intake. At the sides of that intake, performance heads hang polished Ford valve covers over restored exhaust manifolds. A familiar points distributor, which sequences sparks through fresh Autolite Radio Resistance plug wires, lights the fires. Cooling comes courtesy of a stock radiator, which circulates water through pliable Autolite hoses and old school screw clamps. And standard V-belts spin a rebuilt alternator opposite factory power steering. Aesthetically, the clean engine bay appears very close to original, featuring an even combination of Satin Black and Ford Blue paint. And everything, from the car's tagged battery to its bright breather, appears fully sorted and ready to show.
CRUISE-O-MATIC
Judging by its clean appearance, the bottom of this awesome pony has barely seen any road time at all. Behind the first-class Ford mill, a correct Cruise-O-Matic 3-speed automatic transmission drives a correct, nodular iron 9-inch rear axle. That versatile drivetrain rides a lucid factory suspension, which appears to have been fully rebuilt during the car's detailed restoration. Above that suspension, clean floorpans appear solid, showing absolutely no signs of rust or weathering. At the center of those floors, true-dual pipes shuttle spent gases from the aforementioned manifolds to an H-shaped crossover, small resonators and a transversely mounted muffler. At the corners of the car, power-assisted discs and drums make solid stops an absolute cinch. And everything rolls on chromed Magnum 500s, which spin F60-15 Goodyear Polyglas GTs.
A DASH OF RED
Inside this Ford, a correct and equally attractive interior will make any Mustang fan feel right at home. Correct Hi-Back buckets join a correct Sport Deck folding rear seat to provide plenty of support for spirited driving. From the captain's chair, a familiar Mustang dash features a nice set of factory gauges while a Rim Blow Steering Wheel keeps the driver connected to the road. At the center of the cockpit, a correct Philco radio hangs over an ornate chrome shifter and a long factory console. And at the sides of the cabin, bright, crack-free door panels feature an attractive mix of stainless and wood applique.
It's hard to picture the automotive world without Mustangs. In addition to being a long-term staple in the collector car market, they continue to be favorites among racers and purists alike. With its buff 428, cool aesthetics and nearly universal appeal, this exclusive Mach 1 is ideal for anyone who wants a great mix of old school fun and red carpet glory!
