1 OF 17
Beginning life at Tasca Ford in East Providence, Rhode Island, this exclusive Stang met its first owner in June of 1970. Thirteen years later, the car relocated west to a second owner in Denver, Colorado. And in the early part of the 21st century, it was a 56,000-mile, rust-free survivor that, in the hands of a third owner, benefitted from a multi-year, ground-up restoration. That reboot complemented fully stripped sheetmetal with correct Silver Jade two-stage. That pigment looks great under correct Black vinyl. And today, this Shelby glows as 1 of only 245 1969 GT500 convertibles produced, 1 of only 17 1969 GT500 convertibles painted Silver Jade, and 1 of only 13 1969 Silver Jade GT500 convertibles fitted with a White interior.
In an attempt to give their star flagship a more luxurious look for the 1969 model year, Ford designers penned a Shelby-exclusive front-clip that was very contemporary. The car's lightweight fenders frame a large rectangular grille opening that's detailed with an off-set Shelby emblem and 7-inch halogen headlights. Below that grille, a wide valence centers prominent Lucas driving lamps between ornate parking lights and a correct, 1970-spec chin spoiler. At the sides of that valence, a striped profile hangs small Cobra badges and bright 428 callouts above polished door handles, integrated brake ducts and familiar Shelby quarter scoops. At the top of that profile, five NACA scoops feed ram air induction while color-keyed race mirrors reflect stainless-trimmed glass. Opposite that hood, a lightweight Shelby decklid joins stylish Shelby quarter extensions to create a prominent rear spoiler. And below that deck, futuristic taillights, borrowed from the Thunderbird, illuminate a sculpted bumper, stainless-trimmed reverse lamps and a unique aluminum exhaust collector.
POWER BY FORD
Twist this Mustang's polished ties and you'll find a storied, 428 cubic inch Cobra Jet V8 that looks as fresh as the day it rolled out of the restoration shop. Long regarded as one of the meanest MoTown mills ever created, Ford's fabled Cobra Jet utilized revised heads, heavy duty Le Mans connecting rods and a nodular iron crank to ensure Shelby-branded Mustangs remained the kings of stoplight muscle. At the top of the Ford Blue mill, functional ram air feeds a correctly painted and decaled air cleaner that's sealed onto a concours-plated Holley 4-barrel. At the sides of that carb, finned aluminum valve covers shade Jet Hot-coated exhaust manifolds. In front of those tubes, a correct points distributor sequences fire through Autolite Radio Resistance plug wires. Autolite-branded hoses circulate water through era-correct screw clamps and a tagged Ford radiator. And lubrication is greatly enhanced by a deep Shelby oil pan.
RESTORATION-FRESH, TOP AND BOTTOM
Park this pony on a lift and you'll find solid, Satin Black floors that are founded on a factory-correct chassis. A correct C6 3-speed, strengthened when it was professionally rebuilt, spins a correct 9-inch axle. That drivetrain rides a fully restored suspension that's augmented with factory power steering. Factory power front disc and rear drum brakes provide smooth stops. At the center of the car, aluminized exhaust funnels spent gases through an H-shaped crossover, throaty resonators and a transverse turbo muffler. And power meets the pavement through polished Shelby wheels, which spin F60-15 Goodyear Polyglas GTs.
IT'S ALL ABOUT THE CONTRAST
Between the doors, a correct White Clarion Knit vinyl interior mixes correct Corinthian Hi-Back Bucket Seats with correct, optional Deluxe Décor to create enough style to swerve the red carpet. In front of those seats, a clean dash plants a correct, optional tachometer between a 140 MPH speedometer and retrofitted AM/FM audio. Below that dash, a factory console floats a traditional shifter and small accessory gauges on plush carpet that's protected by GT500-themed floor mats. Wood-trimmed door panels are a great complement to Ssnake Oyl seatbelts and an authenticated Carroll Shelby visor signature. And the driver spins a familiar Rim Blow Steering Wheel.
There are few cars that have the kind of attitude and presence of classic Shelby Mustangs. Documented, rare and fully restored, this 1969 GT500 drives and sounds every bit as good as it looks. If you've always wanted to own the ultimate Ford muscle car, here's your chance!
