Detroit Speed Built Camaro Pro Touring LS7 7.0 V8 640hp T56 6 Speed A/C
Watching incredible muscle cars roll through our RK Motors Charlotte showroom never gets old. But sometimes we get the feeling that the pro-touring movement has become more about show and less about go. After all, the philosophy of applying modern technology to old school metal began with guys who were willing to forsake comfort for their obsessions with low E.T.s and big skid pad numbers. And that desire to constantly push the boundaries of classic car performance continues to stoke prices, broaden appeal and spawn a roster of homegrown businesses. Envisioned as the ultimate representation of “sinister functionality”, this razor-sharp Chevy is the direct result of what happens when a diehard enthusiast buys his 22nd Camaro and spares no expense creating an all business, Trans Am-inspired café racer. And if you're a discerning gearhead who's looking for a car with a little more substance than chrome and bright paint, it's your one-way ticket to bigger and better things!
ALL DARK AND HANDSOME
Transformed into a lean, mean pro-touring machine by Mooresville, North Carolina's Detroit Speed, Inc., and recently freshened by Vicksburg, Michigan's Dutchboys Hotrods, this surly F1 wears a ground-up restoration that features a number of thoughtful upgrades. The car's clean fuselage stacks original GM quarters and original GM fenders under smooth Glasurit Mineral Gray Metallic two-stage and strategic Paint Protection Film. And it all adds up to an incredible, eye-catching classic that's sure to make any enthusiast happy!
There's no question that the '69 Camaro is one of the best-looking muscle cars of all time. And when a team of skilled builders executes a bit of carefully planned customization, it only serves to make things better! At the front of this sinister coupe, a shaved grille hangs modern Truck-lite headlights above screened parking lamps, a clean D80 spoiler, and a painted, tucked and smoothed bumper. That bumper leads a custom, SS-style hood, which floats satin-trimmed louvers between a shaved header, monochromatic trim and professionally tinted glass that's cleared by Detroit Speed Selecta-Speed wipers. At the sides of those blades, custom, BMW-style marker lamps join nickel-plated door handles and painted F2 mirrors to add just the right amount of detail to the car's shaved, wet-look profile. And at the back of that profile, a shaved valance hangs custom sequential taillights between a custom spoiler, a custom roll pan and a second painted, tucked and smoothed bumper.
427 CUBIC INCHES OF LS POWER!
Lift the car's billet-tinged hood and you'll find $16K worth of lightweight LS7 small block that was sourced directly from Chevrolet Performance. Founded in GM's very successful Corvette racing program, that epic mill utilizes a forged crank, titanium rods and hypereutectic pistons to flat out whip pretty much anything with four wheels. But wait, there's more… Not satisfied with a 'paltry' 505 horsepower, this Camaro's current owner purchased a Head and Cam Package from Texas Speed and Performance that bumped output to roughly 640 horsepower! A perfect amount of oxygen flows from a cased filter element through a Satin Black air tube to a CNC-ported Mike Norris Motorsports throttle body. That valve creates stout 11 to 1 compression with the help of electronic fuel injection, Goodridge fluid lines and a spry Aeromotive pump. Immediately following combustion, spent gases roar through stainless, long-tube headers. Charge comes courtesy of a fresh alternator that, along with a tidy AC compressor and a direct-fit steering pump, spins a modern accessory drive. GM electronics work well with American Autowire wiring to light the fires, while Peterson fluid components provide requisite dry-sump lubrication. Items like a Be Cool radiator, Detroit Speed plug wires, a fresh brake booster and big SPAL puller fans ensure earth-shattering performance. And the car's fully massaged engine bay is dotted with choice detailing like clean brace bars, billet hood supports, custom rail covers, custom valve covers and quality ARP fasteners.
DETROIT SPEED, IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE
Speaking of track-ready, if you're serious about building a track-ready pro-tourer, the folks at Detroit Speed are exactly the kinds of friends you need to have. And, given the hardcore nature of this Camaro's build, it's fate as a pilot car for the firm's hydroformed front-clip and QUADRALink rear suspension was pretty much a given. Behind the rowdy engine, a custom Detroit Speed support cradles a Tremec T56 Magnum 6-speed, sourced from the pros at Bowler, which spins a custom driveshaft that was sourced from the pros at Dynotech. The aforementioned QUADRALink hangs adjustable coil-over-shocks at the sides of a proven Strange 9-inch, which spins a Truetrac differential around Moser axles, Torino bearings and big, 3.70 gears. Opposite that QUADRALink, the aforementioned front clip makes excellent use of tubular control arms, two more adjustable coil-overs, Corvette spindles and power rack-and-pinion steering. At the corners of that suspension, color-keyed 4 and 6-piston PBRs clamp 13 and 14-inch drilled rotors: the exact same set-up you'd find on Chevrolet's fantastic C6 Z06. Exhaust floats through custom, three-inch pipes, which employ an X-shaped crossover and aggressive Borla mufflers. Power meets the pavement through clear coated Fikse Profil 5s, which twist 275/35ZR18 Continental ExtremeContacts in front of 335/30ZR18 Continental ExtremeContacts. And the car's solid, Rhino lined floors, which follow Detroit Speed subframe connectors with Detroit Speed mini tubs, are finished with a stainless Rock Valley tank and a Derale remote power steering cooler.
ALL BUSINESS STYLE
Hit the door poppers and you'll find a custom leather interior that, like the rest of the car, supplements artistic form with exceptional function. The firm seats, modified Recaro Specialists up front and a custom bench out back, were, along with the car's door panels, console and carpet, installed by Chuck Hanna's Hot Rod Interiors of Mooresville, North Carolina. A custom, Nova-inspired dash makes referencing Auto Meter Phantom II telemetry super easy while keeping Alpine audio and Vintage Air climate control within arm's reach. High quality Dynamat insulation founds custom sills and color-keyed floor mats beneath billet foot pedals and a billet shifter. In addition to billet window cranks and soft courtesy lighting, the cockpit features a full JL Audio sound system. The driver spins a GM-branded MOMO Race wheel around a tilting Ididit column. A custom, six-point roll cage and sturdy, four-point harnesses ensure plenty of safe travel. And the passengers stow essentials in a remote-operated trunk that's finished with a hearty Optima battery.
Very few classics possess the reliable, well-rounded performance of this incredible Camaro. You're looking at a track-ready, purpose-built pro-tourer, and when your foot hits the floor, that's exactly what you'll get! Tired of the hobby's obsession with bright, bling-tastic garage queens? Want to look good AND go fast? Don't miss your chance to claim this one-of-a-kind custom!
